Distance: 399 miles
From: Lexington, MA
To: Corning, NY
Important tourist attractions: Corning Glass Museum
Where we stayed: Ferenbough Campground
So we left Lexington ahead of schedule at 8:45am. However, we stopped 100 yards from the house because someone forgot their sandals.
Then we drove another 500 yards and turned around because somebody forgot the new side mirror.
Then we left on time.
At our first gas stop we calculated our miles per gallon at 10. Ugh. 10. The Pilot normally gets 20. Pulling the trailer apparently isn't so efficient. That just doubled our gas cost for the entire trip. Thinking it was a fluke, we calculated again at the next gas stop. 10 again. And then 9. Ermergerd. Also Danny discovered that the latch on the cereal cabinet had popped open dropping the cereal onto the floor of the camper. We swapped out the latch for a better one that uses 2 eye hooks and a tent stake.
Anyway, aside from the punch in the wallet from gas, the trip was actually quite pleasant. Kids had no ipads or electronics and survived ok. We started tracking license plates until the kids refused to write down new states. Then we talked about the cows, the barns and whatever else we saw.
We ate junk food from the gas stations and pulled up to the campground at around 4:00pm. The campground was nice. Max set up his tent and we opened the trailer to discover that the Tabasco sauce had spilled onto the bed. Ermergerd. Ok, the campground has laundry. We figured we'd wash the pillowcase in the am.
We headed off to the Corning Museum of Glass (CMoG). Amazing place. Saw a glass breaking demonstration - Audrey won a glass bear. Then the kids did a glass blowing class while Max and I saw the amazing permanent collection - lots of 2 and 3 thousand (!) year old glass all the way up to modern times. Just amazing.
Went back to campground - despite rain while we in the museum, everything was dry. Kids played on ipads until bedtime. Max did some Math he is required to do for summer.
In the am, we started the laundry and cleaned up. Ate rescued cereal and milk at the campsite. Made coffee in the camper (stove worked!).
We hit the CMoG at 9am and saw the hot glass demonstration and everyone saw the permanent collection, - well, not all of it since that would take hours. Starving again, we got snacks and I wrote this blog post in the CMoG cafeteria which has wifi.
Now, on to Dayton, OH...
Erhmegerd! So much fun! Can't wait for the next installment!
