Day1 - Gas mileage meets our low expectations, Chick-Fil-A, swimming, rain, leak

June 22, 2020
Day 1
From: Lexington, MA
To: Hershey, PA (Hershey Road Campground
1590 Hershey Road Elizabethtown, PA 17022 United States)

B and I got up early, say 5:30am, because...couldn't sleep? Not sure. Anyway, it poured rain yesterday and we had stuffed everything into the camper so the first order of business was to take all the wet stuff from the camper and repack it.

Then cut up some strawberries that wouldn't keep and eat them for breakfast.

D was up since he couldn't sleep either - said his room was too hot. D headed back to his mom's to get some items he left behind while I cleaned up the yard and B cleaned up inside the house.

Then the three of us (re)packed the camper.

A last ditch effort to collect and make sure everyone had the right charging cords for laptops, our new #goprohero8 and various cell phones.  Times change so no ipads or tablets anymore.

And we're off at around 7:45am - filled up the gas tank locally and B wrote down the mileage in her phone.

Next stop for gas in Connecticut somewhere and to our utter and complete resignation our gas mileage is ... 10 miles/gallon - as disappointingly expected. Oh well, that's what you get when pull a camper with a 6 cylinder.

Masks were on for each stop and we quickly went through CT, NY, NJ and then PA. Lunch in NJ at a Chick-Fil-A. Drive-through only.  Had to wait for a Dunkin Donuts in PA to get a restroom.

A nice drive through Hershey, PA and we arrived around 4pm at the Hershey RV Park where we had reservations.  It was hot as the dickens, the air thick as soup.  We quickly headed to the pool which was not crowded and really nice.

A nice dude at the pool quickly pointed out his disappointment with the recent NASCAR decision to ban the confederate flag.  I steered the conversation to the upcoming rainstorm and pointed out that some of the suggestions for a new flag for Mississippi were pretty good.  We moved on to other topics.

Of course, since it's us, dark clouds moved in and we got a rainstorm complete with thunder and lightning. The kids moved their stuff into the camper, with parental encouragement, and decided not to sleep in their tents, which are now soaked and waiting for wet re-packing the morning.

Kids are hanging at the table, headphones on, laptopping, iphoning, connected and, I think, content. B has passed out even though its still light out.  The rain has stopped, and it's that peaceful evening, cooler and cleaner than before, a breeze blowing through.

And, of course, there's a leak in the camper roof, dripping on the stove.  Will fix in Ohio.

Our solar power system is working, hence why I can post this blog entry.

This is in Lexington, before leaving on the trip.
