Hershey to the Farm

We left Hershey relatively early and drove pretty much straight through to Hamilton, OH.  Gas mileage remained at 10mpg and even a bit below that.

We bought snacks in some hilly area in Pennsylvania for lunch, opting to make time rather than eat well.

Interstate 70 across PA is a mixture of new, great road and areas still under (re)construction.  But interestingly, there was very little traffic. At one point I recall there were literally no cars ahead or behind us on the highway (though that was only once).

We passed through 5 or 6 tunnels on I70, through the Allegheny mountains at least two of which were single lane both directions, providing some unwanted but not unwarranted excitement for the driver.

B and I also noticed that there are very few campers or RVs and no tour buses on the road, indicating that our trip west may be less crowded than it could be.

The total drive was about 9 hours, including quite a few stops for gas, but none of the stops was long.

Arriving at the Farm

We arrived at Chez Roy around 5:45pm, just in time for he and Angeline to provid home made french fries, turkey burgers from the grill and drinks.

As we were approaching the farm, indicator lights on our car dashboard started blinking and when we arrived a check showed that we had basically no oil in the engine.  We mulled reasons and none were found immediately.   Roy had some oil and we filled it up. It was decided to buy more oil for the trip and monitor the patient to see if the problem repeated and to treat with more oil as needed.

The evening weather was perfect. Cool, breezy, dry.  Kids tented, adults campered. Sleep was had.  But before sleep fireflies were chased because that's what people do.

Morning brought us more perfect weather.  Coffee, pastries on the brick patio of the old stone house. Including a visit from a friendly yellow lab, a toad, woodpeckers, the cats Quentin and Barney.

A shopping trip for oil, flexi-seal for the camper roof, missing clothing items and Jungle Jim's - the largest grocery store on Earth (probably pretty close to the truth).

Then...farm chores and doing some target shooting.

Farm to Higginsville, MO

We finally had D do some of the driving, which was a big help.

Gas was still 10 MPG.

We checked the oil and it was fine.

We saw a stealth bomber near Higginsville

A long drive.  Ate McDonald's take-out in the parking lot.

Mask usage declined as we went west.

Arrived around 6 pm Central time in Higginsville and quickly hit the pool and did some laundry, social distancing, etc.  Weird to be in a campground and not introduce ourselves and offer to share snacks with other campers.

Some excitement when we saw a stealth bomber near Higginsville. There's an air force base nearby where they are stationed.  Looked like a kite, not an airplane.

The solar had depleted at the Farm because we were parked in the shade, but had completely recuperated while driving, so that's how I'm writing this long blog post.
